1. Collision Theory

The project’s process of repurposing discarded and tarnished airbags to bring new life by means of deconstructing and upcycling the durable material into an ensemble of functional garments and bag accessories then further returning to the place of resource extraction, being the scrap yard in Booysens, Johannesburg filled with a fleet of written off wrecked automobiles

2 . PROCESS

The process started with extracting used tarnished airbags from the dismantled automobiles. The components of the garments consisted of different types of airbags extracted from the steering wheel, seat, dashboard and the curtain side of the cars. The different structural elements of the airbags dictated the approach of garment construction.

From extracting and rigorous washing then came deconstruction: unpicking and ironing out the material in preparation for cutting the panels and patterns for the garments and bags.

The silhouette of the final ensemble were referenced from existing garments and rough sketches to idealise the style and colour scheme of the ensemble.
